I think looking to fictional utopias and dystopias is a poor way to understand the real world with its complexities and nuances. These can be used to illuminate specific issues, but not the wider cultural needs for progress.

I would agree that these fictional "realities" are simply constructs unlikely to fit in the actual world. But they do give us some basis of ideas to derive from; elements to strive for and work towards.
These days, dystopian outcomes seem to outnumber utopian by a pretty wide margin. But that's just my personal experience, and thus bias.
Trouble is, dystopias are more grounded in historical precedent, despite being exaggerated. Utopias tend to just imagine away inconvenient reelities.
