We discover that we have been transported to an island. In another world. That's bound to break some people... Poor Ryo...

Digimon Survive is a Digimon Visual Novel with Turn-based strategy battles. The game follows a group of children who find themselves in another world, and their desperate attempts to find a way back home. The children find themselves involved with monsters, both as partners and enemies.

This is the darkest piece of Digimon media I ever consumed, and Cybersleuth had pretty dark stuff too. Digimon Survive fuses the concept of Digital Monsters with Japanese folklore. It's amazing how the idea of "child sacrifice" integrates seamlessly with Digimon lore. The specific Digimon they choose for this game enhance this theme.

Digimon Survive is the closest modern entry to the old school Digimon anime vibes. Though, more than the earlier Digimon anime series, the game reminds me more of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor series. In that series too, characters may die depending on your actions.

14 - His Mommy Issues

After the fight with Arukenimon, the party find a trapped Tentmon who tells them about the human girl he saved. The description matched Miu. He also tells them to climb the Radio Tower to get a view for where she went...

As the players see the view from above, everyone is shocked!!!

The area there were in was completely surrounded by water: They are in an Island! The children quickly realize they were transported to another world.

Ryo snaps, and runs away alone while freaking out. Saying things about his "Mommy" calling him, and something about the after life.

Arukenimon finds him, at first she wanted to take him as a sacrifice, but after seeing how broken he is, she decides to have her underlings just kill him.

A battle starts between us and Cyclonmon, the underling. Ryo falls from the bridge. Saki's partner Floramon digivolves to Vegimon!

While the friends were battling, Ryo wakes up to find himself alive, and Haru saying that he saved him somehow. Ryo keeps talking in delusion, thinking he must be dead. This is the afterlife, so he can meet his mother.

Haru is right, Ryo is already broken...

The friends finally finish the battle and come to see if Ryo is okay, but... Ryo was talking to the fog as if it was his mother...

Then in a moment the Fog becomes black and swallows him!

It takes the other children a while to realize the truth: Ryo is dead!! He's our first confirmed death in Digimon Survive and to make it worse, Kunemon follows him too. They vanish without a trace...
