RE: Short Circuit (1986) Is One Of The Most Fun And Underrated Movies Of The Eighties. It Is A Weird Mix Of Science Fiction, Comedy, And Heart That Somehow Works. It Is Not Perfect, But It Is A Damn Good Time And A Movie That Deserves More Credit.

Remembering this movie having first watched it as a small child, and looking back now is priceless, you are right the mix of tech, comedy, and heartfelt story would be bizarre by modern standards but in the 80's was par for the course. Magical time!

Some things definitely wouldn't fly now, Fisher Stevens portrayal of an indian developer would never meet the PC bar now, not even close lol.

Let's not forget the ludicrously over the top performance by G.W. Bailey 'Skroeder', which is almost a carbon copy of his Police Academy character Captain Harris.

So many fantastic jokes, Sheedy having a bath and '5' wheels in and spots her:

Number 5: "Stephanie... change color!"
Number 5: Attractive! Nice software. Mmmm.

Or when Stephanies abusive boyfriend comes around and '5' dismantles his car back to a laid out kit while the boyfriend is in the house, haha!

'5' is definitely the star of the movie but the chemistry of much of the supporting cast is dynamite. Guttenberg & Stevens in the lab discussing his first meeting with Stephanie, and possible love interest is hilarity! :)

The more serious side of the movie, the heartfelt '5' moments where he shares his take on morality after becoming alive is a real anchor back to 80's movie scene. Guttenberg & Sheedy sitting all night with '5' trying to work out how they can convince the world '5' is really alive, confirmed by a joke, a bad joke at that lol.

I'm looking at this movie through some highly nostalgic rose tinted glasses, but even so for me it's an easy 9/10, must watch it again soon!
