I might add this to my library list. I didn't know much about it until I was in Portugal. They sure spent a FUCK ton of money.

Yep ! I get the impression that Portugal became wealthy through it's colonies because Portugal itself didn't have a lot apart from farming, but they didn't always spend the money wisely or re-invest it to keep the wealth flowing. But I've always found the Portuguese to be really nice people whenever I've met or worked with them 😀

Oh when we travelled a few years ago there in an old Land Rover they were incredibly hospitable!!!
