People have been suggesting for ages that part of the growing mental health struggles for many is the disconnect between their own reality and comparing it to the curated images of perfection others project in social media. I worry about the world my nieces and nephew are growing into. It was bad enough when legacy media was the main media. The internet and its attention economy absolutely have a dark side.
A bad analogy: if I only post pictures of my Friend-Shaped Car after a trip through the car wash, and after photoshopping out paint chips, and never mention the real work it takes to keep it running, you have a false picture of my car, and it might make your lived automotive reality seem more burdensome than it is. And if everyone is posting these carefully-curated car pictures, you get a false impression that you can never measure up.
After that, I hope a "happy birthday" doesn't ring hollow! Aging is part of the human experience. Obsession with youth leads many to forget how to live.
