hey buddy, can you tell me how to attack or at least prevent being attacked? I always got robbed right before I could afford a higher level bee. Despite that I made 5th place :)
Two main ways not to be attacked: be forky (the whale, no one has enough to defeat your defence). Or the second option, which most users will use. Try to attack every 15mins (and leverage Torpor when you sleep) to keep yourself on cooldown so others can't attack you.
The middle of the leaderboard is the hardest place to be; you make enough honey that the whales want to steal it, but not enough defence to stop it.
We're looking at ways to balance out the middle of the pack; any ideas are welcome

What @slothlydoesit said, but until people undrestand that constanly attacking everyone to gain more honey is the only way to gain "whale" moment... people will keep being under.
Being a whale on this game and not being able to attack is pointless... so I am keeping on attacking to show it matters. And if that needs to be changed... Fine! :D
Yes, when you attack, you enter a 15-minute cooldown during which you cannot attack or be attacked (the same cooldown is added if you are attacked).
You can't 'stake' slothshards for defence; any you have are simply used as a shield before the attack lands. If the attacker doesn't send enough, he won't steal any honey from you.
Being proactive is the best defence. (The game may be called Sloths Mining War, but you need a lot of buzz to be the best :D )
I've checked the PvP log and I see many cases where someone raided a player and in a few minutes another player raided it. So in practice NO, attacking won't protect you from incoming raids.
I agree, we might need to balance it out slightly more, allowing people to combine their attacks on whales, or reducing the number of attacks per day to allow players a slightly more slothful experience. We're still weighing up all options and will make some adjustments as we progress!
It's great to see how players strategise, and it always gives us more to think about when we see players taking different approaches!
I think you have been doing lots of adjustments... so I can't complain. Really great reactive development where people who can understand development can really contribute.

does attacking shield me from getting attacked? How can I stake sloth shards for defense?
shield reduces attacks destruction by half...
But the best way to power up is to shard up early... I did it... so I got an advantage.
The game needs to change that as super power!
