I reckon so ! They weren't especially accurate, and could go out if there was a draught in the room. But they were better than nothing, and apparently you could turn one into an alarm clock by sitting it on a metal saucer then sticking a nail in the wax that would melt out and clatter into the saucer around the time you wanted to be woken up.
